I don't enjoy writing, and I certainly
would not do it for a living. Some people
do, but some people enjoy flagellation.

--Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh

Writers have two main problems. One is writer's block, when the words
won't come at all and the other is logorrhea, when the words come so
fast that they can hardly get to the wastebasket in time.

Convince yourself that you are working in clay not marble, on paper not
eternal bronze; let that first sentence be as stupid as it wishes. No
one will rush out and print it as it stands. Just put it down; then
another.

--Jacques Barzun, historian and essayist

The most durable thing in writing is style, and style is the most
valuable investment a writer can make with his time. It pays off
slowly, your agent will sneer at it, your publisher will misunderstand
it, and it will take people you have never heard of to convince them by
slow degrees that the writer who puts his individual mark on the way he
writes will always pay off.

--Raymond Chandler (1888-1959), U.S. author. Letter, 7 March 1947
(published in Raymond Chandler Speaking, 1962).
